The farm-to-table movement has found its way into the greater Phoenix area, and more than ever, Valley residents are discovering new ways to buy and prepare their favorite meals from food that is produced right here in Arizona. You can now find these fresh and delicious ingredients every week at your local farmer’s markets. Regardless of where you live in the Valley, you can find one close to you!

Local farmer’s markets are dedicated to supporting local growers and direct producers here in Arizona who engage in sustainable farming, including the use of organic compost and natural fertilizers. They are typically small local growers or farmers who grow in a large backyard or a few hundred acres. The markets bring you seasonal produce as well as natural pork, beef and fish. Aside from the food, many farmer’s markets around the Phoenix area also include arts and crafts as well as live music and poetry events.

Here are some ways to get the most out of your visit:

  • The early bird gets the worm. Show up early to get your pick of the best produce available.
  • Although most markets accept credit/debit cards, it’s usually a good idea to bring a little bit of cash.
  • Talk to the growers about the produce they brought, including what’s in season and their favorite recipes.
  • Bring your own canvas bags or recycled shopping bags. You can often purchase a reusable canvas bag on-site as well.
  • Especially during warm weather, it’s helpful to bring a cooler along to keep your produce fresh on the way home.
  • Relax and enjoy the people-watching! This is a perfect way to get to know your neighbors and the farmers!
