Law-related shows make for some of the most compelling shows because the audience gets to follow along in a world most of us don’t participate in. There have been countless law-related television shows, but there have been a few that have really stood the test of time. Here is a list of the top 5 best law-related shows of all time.

  1. Boston Legal: This classic legal show ran from 2004 until 2008 and stars James Spader and William Shatner. The legal drama follows lawyer Alan Shore as he gains a reputation for winning civil cases with his unconventional friend’s help, Denny Crane. His methods of winning are not full of integrity, so he builds up a rivalry with his colleague, Brad Chase. The drama is ranked among the best law-related television shows of all time because the characters and writing of the show make it thoroughly enjoyable, but the law aspect of the drama have been proven not-so-realistic.
  2. Law & Order: Creator Dick Wolf has created an empire of successful and intriguing law shows with this smash hit. Law & Order is both a self-titled 1990’s original show and a spin off point for Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. All the shows follow the same format: lawyers and police take on a new crime every episode as viewers watch them work through and solve the case during the episode. The drama follows the office relationship storylines as well, making it compelling for all audiences.
  3. Suits: In this show, which started in 2011 but is still currently on the air, Gabriel Macht and Patrick Adam star as a law duo. Mike is a college dropout with exceptional intellect who is hired by lawyer Harvey. The two then become an unstoppable duo as they complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses to win case after case.
  4. Ally McBeal: Calista Flockhart and Greg Germann star in this drama, which ran from 1997 until 2002. The premise of the show follows Ally, who went to law school following her childhood love, Billy. Then Billy and Ally break up and end up working at the same law firm, at which Billy’s wife also works. The show follows the dynamics of the office, making for an interesting episode every time.
  5. Jag: Jag stars David James Elliott and Catherine Bell, and centers around the two as JAG lawyers, participating in cases where Navy and Marine personnel have committed crimes. The show follows the two as they work through cases and bring them to a conclusion.
