Approximately 7,000 people in Oklahoma were given free testing for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV after health inspectors claimed to have found horrific conditions in an oral surgery practice. Owner and surgeon, Scott W. Harrington is now facing criminal charges from his unsanitary and unprofessional practice.

The medical malpractice investigation stemmed from a complaint of a patient who claimed they contracted hepatitis C from a procedure; what the inspectors then found was said to be absolutely appalling. The sterilization of utensils and needles was not sufficient which lead to corroding tools and cross-contamination.   The sterilization equipment which is supposed to be checked monthly had not been tested in years, according to reports.

Dr. Harrington is said to be cooperating with officials and has temporarily surrendered his license to practice because of the ongoing investigation of medical malpractice.  Some of the medications were also expired, some of which date back to 1993.

Many of the workers were also unlicensed or unauthorized to work in a medical environment, which helped contribute to the significantly poor conditions of the office.  According to one report, a member of the staff told a patient who suddenly awoke during a procedure to “shut up” as they forced him down and tied him to the floor.

The medical records in the office only stretch back to 2007, but pop-up HIV and hepatitis stations have are now available around the North Tulsa area for any former patients to get tested. This incident was not the first time the now infamous doctor has been sued, as his records indicate medical malpractice and negligence charges from the past, as well as a paternity suit.

Hundreds of people lined up this past weekend to anxiously await the results from the tests which could severely impact their lives.
