The U.S. offers veterans of the Armed Forces a number of useful benefits including disability compensation, pension programs, free or low-cost medical care, education assistance and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) support. This article covers the main benefits veterans are entitled to and the requirements that make you eligible to receive them.

Veterans’ legal military law benefits

Disability compensation
Military veterans who received an injury during their time of service may qualify for monthly disability benefits ranging from $127 to more than $3,000. Those who have suffered a very severe injury such as the loss of a limb will be entitled to additional compensation.
If you would like to apply to receive these benefits you need to take this paperwork to the VA or apply online:

  • Discharge of separation papers
  • Service Treatment Records (if they are in your possession) or other evidence showing a connection between your disability and your military service
  • Medical evidence of your disability

Pension Programs
The VA offers veterans of the military a pension program. It is offered to veterans on a needs basis to those who have a disability or limited income and inability to work. To qualify, a veteran must:

  • Have been discharged from service after at least 90 days of active duty service with at least one day during an eligible wartime period (for other than dishonorable reasons)
  • Have a yearly family income that is less than the amount set by Congress
  • Be 65 or older
  • Be totally and permanently disabled
  • Be a patient in a nursing home receiving skilled nursing care
  • Be receiving Social Security Disability Insurance
  • Be receiving Supplemental Security Income

Health Care
The U.S. government provides free or low cost health care services services at VA health facilities. The VA is required to provide veterans with hospital and outpatient care that is needed.

Education and career services
The VA offers educational programs and career services to help veterans get back onto their feet and be successful.
