Halloween night is the setpiece for many a horror movie/story, and for good reason. It’s the night dedicated to making as-frightening-as-possible costumes, and scaring strangers either for fun or for candy.

Naturally, this can cause people to be more fearful for their or their kids’ safety, but luckily Halloween is one of the biggest party nights of the year, and as such, there is no shortage of safe things to do throughout the valley.

Not only will there be myriad events on All Hallow’s Eve itself, but there are also quite a few spread out on the days surrounding the 31st. Here are but a few:

PoeFest – Hotel San Carlos and the Rosson House

Few writers are as beloved for their macabre stories as Edgar Allen Poe is.

All of those tales will be recreated by classically-trained performers as inmates of a Victorian insane asylum on October 30th and 31st. See here for details and ticket prices.

Zombie Apocalypse – San Tan Mountain Regional Park

Everyone is familiar with zombies, and since their introduction in the mid-20th century, they have shot to the forefront of modern horror-story culture.

In this event, which takes place starting at 7 P.M. on October 30th, people will be attempting to follow a provided trail while scavenging for supplies and survival gear. Naturally, the whole time, zombies will be a threat, attempting to stop participants (and possibly even convert some of them to zombies themselves).

The event is free, but there is a vehicle fee ($6) to enter the park.

Cave Creek Wicked – Cave Creek

This 13-hour long, family-friendly outing will have such things as costumed bike rides, arts and crafts stations, pet costume contests, and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as performed by a dance studio.

There will also be an adult-themed bar crawl visiting a number of Cave Creek destinations, complete with costume contests.

The event will be free, and full details are available here.
